Congratulations Laura Vallverdu !
Laura Vallverdu a Senior at the University of Miami is a former student and coach here at NTT. Laura is ranked No. 6 in the nation in preseason polls and fought her way all the way to the semifinals of the WIlson/ITA Southeast Region Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. Vallverdu took the first set 6-4, against University of Florida's Allie Will, but lost the following two sets 1-6, 4-6. Laura's record this season is now 6-4, her overall record is 102-25 as a hurricane. Laura is only nine wins away from the record for the most singles victories in program history. In doubles, Mejia and Vallverdu were seeded third overall in the doubles draw and won the title by defeating University of South Florida's Melissa Koning and Irene Rehberger 8-3. Mejia and Vallverdu now advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships in November held at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Great job Laura and good luck in Connecticut!
Only 2 spots left for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals
There are already six of the eight contenders in place which include: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Andy Roddick. Two weeks remain in the race for the last places in the Barclays World Tour Finals. With ATP World Tour 500 tournaments in Valencia, Spain and Basel, Switzerland players have felt the pressure to rack up as many points as possible. The BNP Masters Cup in Paris is also a huge opportunity for players to win last minute points. At the moment nine players are on the cusp of winning one of the last 2 berths in London. This week in Valencia Nicolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Gilles Simon, Tommy Robredo, and Gael Monfils will be battling it out for covetted points. Fernando Gonzalez, along with Marin Cilic and Radek Stepanek will play in Basel this week. NTT friend Fernando Gonzalez of Chile is seeded third in Basel. If Fernando wins the title in Basel he would add the full 500 points to his total. Gonzalez won this title in 2005. He must now face American John Isner in the first round. NTT wishes Fernando Gonzalez good luck on his way to making it into the ATP World Tour Finals! !
Lapentti Puts Retirement on hold...
One of Nunez Tennis Trainings former students and the former No. 6 in the world, Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador has decided to delay his retirement plan. Originally Lapentti had plans to retire at the end of the 2009 season. Nico changed his mind when Ecuador defeated Brazil in the Davis Cup World Play-offs just this past September. Ecuador must face Croatia in the first round of the 2010 Davis Cup World Group. Everyone at NTT wants to wish Nicolas Lapentti and the rest of the Ecuadorian Tennis Team the best of luck in their upcoming match against Croatia !
